Drew University Men’s basketball continued its exciting season with a win and loss on the road in Pennsylvania last weekend. The Rangers beat Moravian University and lost in a close game to University of Scranton.
Out in Bethlehem, P.A., the Rangers were able to narrowly win their game versus Moravian.
It was during this game that guard Joe Horvath (’11), scored his career high points in a game. He scored 27 points throughout the game.
After a slow start to the game, the Rangers were able to control the ball throughout the middle half of the game. Michael Mayes (’11) hit some free throws to tie the game at 15-15, and then the Rangers went on an incredible 14-0 streak.
Horvath and Travis DeNapoli (’10) led the run, scoring a few three-pointers. Many players saw playing time—in addition to Horvath’s points, points were earned by other players like Mehmet Onen (’13), and Terrell Brown (’12).
Drew was able to lead the game for 28 minutes thanks to Horvath’s career high of 27 points. Last season, he set his previous career high of 16 points at the Rose City Classic versus Thomas College.
The following day Drew lost in a very close and exciting game against Scranton. Mayes continued his string of great games. The game started off close, but with three minutes left in the half, the Royals had gained a 12 point lead. Thanks to a three-pointer by Kyle Joyce (’11), the Rangers only trailed behind by 10 points at halftime.
Mayes drew some fouls early in the second half, but made both shots as he has improved his shooting from the line. Mayes, Joyce and DeNapoli all got baskets to close the deficit. Some layups from Joyce helped make the game tied as the clock got down to six minutes.
The Rangers were able to have good ball movement and control as they attempted to gain a lead over the Royals in the final minutes of the game.
However, with about a minute left in the game, Scranton hit lots of free throws, and despite Mayes and Brown’s attempt to hold on to a lead, they were unable to do so.
The Rangers are now 3-6 in the Landmark Conference.
They play at Juniata on Friday where they hope to better their Landmark Conference record.
Drew’s win over Moravian brought them to a three game winning streak, only the second time that has happened in nine seasons.
