After fighting melanoma, Professor of Political Science Emeritus Paul Bernard Wice died at the age of 67 on Nov. 15, according to the Nov. 18 The Star Ledger.
Wice served as a professor in the Political Science Department for 31 years.
In addition he was an “award-winning teacher and writer [and an] expert in constitutional, criminal justice, and urban studies,” The Star Ledger said.
The Ledger also stated that Wice received full professorship at Drew in 1987.
According The Ledger, Wice was had extensive experience in teaching prior to his tenure at Drew.
These include acquiring a Ph.D in Political Science from the University of Illinois. Wice began his teaching career as an assistant professor at Washington and Jefferson College.
“Paul went to college at Bucknell University and graduated in 1964 and received his M.A. from American University in 1966,” The Ledger said.
Wice received several accolades and titles in his lifetime, according to The Ledger.
These include serving as a scholar in the residence of New Jersey’s judicial system and receiving Drew’s Distinguished Teacher and Scholar Award in 1988.
“In 1996, he was a visiting scholar at the Center for the Study of Law and Society at the University of California, Berkeley.
“He was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award by the New Jersey Department of Higher Education in 1989.”
According to The Ledger, Wice is the author of severel acclaimed books.
The Ledger said Wice was “a gifted writer, whose strength in teaching illuminated the complex matter of his 11 books.
“His final book, published in 2008, is “Presidents in Retirement: Alone and Out of Office” (Lexington Books).
“In 1996, he was a visiting scholar at the Center for the Study of Law and Society at the University of California, Berkeley.
He earned the New Jersey Authors Award for his book “Rubin ‘Hurricane’ Carter and the American Justice System” (Rutgers University Press, 2000) in 2001.”
In 2007, Wice was the recipient of a heart transplant, which “allowed him to witness the successes of his three children,” The Star Ledger said.
There will be visitation at Dangler Funeral Home in Madison on Thursday. from 5 - 9 p.m. and a service on Friday morning at 11 a.m. also at Dangler.
