Drew University honored its 2009 Employee of the Year, Director of Instructional Technological Services Gamin Bartle, on Friday, Nov. 13.
As University President Bob Weisbuch introduced her, he said that she is “someone who understands…intricacies, purposes and challenges,” and that she is receiving the award for her “kindness, intelligence and ability to solve everyone’s problems.”
Her facial expressions showed a blend of joy and astonishment as she rose to accept the award and immediately thanked all of her colleagues.
Bartle works in the Faculty Lab, a small but quaint office in the basement of Brothers College. According to Bartle, the office provides technological assistance with software to faculty, students and other staff.
In response to receiving the award, Bartle said in a follow-up interview, “I feel great. I was surprised and I was gratified because we all work really hard here, so it was just very nice to be recognized.”
At the ceremony, Weisbuch said there were 32 nominees for this year’s award.
Bartle laughed as she explained that she was unsure of how she came to be nominated. Jessica Glickman (’10) played a significant role in her nomination.
“When Weisbuch asked for recommendations, I forwarded it to everyone on staff and suggested we nominate her,” Glickman said. “I told everyone to please write something at length, not just [her name].” Ultimately, her tactic was successful.
Faculty Lab student employee Heather Greco (’10) said in an e-mail, “I nominated [Bartle] because she is an amazing boss. She is smart and patient, but you can say that about a lot of people. What makes [her] special is that she is always going the extra mile and willing to help you no matter what…If you need any help personally, [she] is always listening and tries to help in the best way she can. She is a great boss and a great friend at the same time.”
Others who work with Bartle shared similar stories of her kindness and support.
Co-worker and Instructional Technology Specialist Sara Ashley works in the office next door to Bartle. Ashley said, “I was just so happy for her because she’s doing so many different jobs at the same time, and being able to manage that and being effective—I think that’s really phenomenal.”
Jessica Hiller (’10), student employee at the Media Resource Center, said in an e-mail, “[Bartle] is fantastic. She’s really nice and helpful and I can’t imagine anyone who doesn’t like her.  She’s a hard worker and good at what she does.  She completely deserves this award.”
Bartle summarized her duties in a brief sentence. “I mainly just oversee the services and make sure my staff has everything they need to take care of their customers. [ITS] really is a service department,” she said.
Ashley, however, explained that there are hardships that come with being the director of ITS. “In the face of being short staffed and with those difficulties, she still managed to fulfill her duties. It’s really amazing to me. I don’t know how she gets it all done,” Ashley said.
“She’s warm and a great listener and no matter what’s put on her plate she handles it with ease,” Glickman said. “I can’t think of a better boss to have at Drew.”
