For most American students, Veterans Day is a day to relax and hang out with friends. With the United States currently embroiled in two wars, however, some members of the Drew University community took time out of their day to recognize and commemorate those who fought for our nation, both past and present.
As the Class of 2009 wraps up its last fall in the Forest, most seniors have the cushion of one more semester at Drew University before they find themselves in the real world. Not all of them will be returning to enjoy a last Drew spring, though. For a number of seniors, the end of this semester will be the beginning of their life as a college graduate.
The Student Government Association has been working hard to improve Drew University for students. SGA President Dana Etkowicz ('09) said that increasing tolerance, unity and community at Drew are the major goals for this year. Earlier in the semester, the SGA held a meeting between club leaders and sports team captains to introduce the many sports teams and clubs to one another.
Sophie Freud, granddaughter of psychologist Sigmund Freud, spoke to a packed University Center 107 about her book, "Living in the Shadow of the Freud Family." "I ask myself and you why somebody my age [would] still write a book," she began. She explained that the important thing is the satisfaction of "leaving a footprint behind.
The long-awaited Drew University Human Rights Policy has finally been announced after three years of drafting. Co-chairs Professor of English Peggy Samuels and Associate Dean for Curriculum and Faculty Development Wendy Kolmar, along with a committee comprised of faculty, community and students, put the policy together.
According to Drew University's web site, a resident student's tuition bill for the 2008-2009 school year is $52,131, while a commuter's bill is $45,199. To counter these high costs, the Students for a Democratic Society are spreading a pamphlet entitled "A Modest Proposal: A Professor's Guide to a More Student-Friendly Curriculum" in which they provide facts about current student debts and how to save on college textbooks through methods like Moodle, the Library Reserve System, and the Pepin Service Center.
Journalist, blogger and author Rick Perlstein addresses the audience of the "Conservatism: Past, Present, and Future" lecture. The lecture, sponsored by the Caspersen School Ph.D Program in History and Culture and the Center on Religion, Culture and Conflict, took place yesterday and was highly attended.
