Drew mourns beloved icon Merrill Skaggs

Professor Merrill Skaggs, a scholar of American literature, the former Dean of the Graduate School, a member of the Drew faculty for 45 years, died last Monday at the age of 70. She will be remembered by all for her bold opinions, kind heart and strong presence on campus.

Students, faculty celebrate election

Tuesday night, Drew University's students and faculty anxiously awaited the results of the 2008 national election. When the results finally did come in, the anticipation bubbled over into festive pandemonium in the University Center. The Political Science Department, Pi Sigma Alpha and the Political Science Honor Society sponsored Election night Watch in UC 107.

Policy encourages prof volunteerism

In accordance with Drew University's commitment to civic engagement, the Volunteer Service Leave Policy has taken effect as of Nov. 1. The policy's purpose, according to its proposal, is to allow "eligible full and part-time staff to request paid time off in order to voluntarily donate their time and talents to actively engage in community service work.

The enduring Young family is more tightly bound to Drew than Houdini,the subject of last week's seance, ever was by his handcuffs. Dorothy Young, Houdini's former assistant who funded Drew's Art Center and for whom it is named, attended the séance, continuing her long-standing commitment to and support for the university.

Error causes headaches for student voters

Drew students, like millions of other people across the country, eagerly awaited Tuesday's presidential election. Regardless of which candidate they were supporting, students were excited to get out and vote -many for the first time. After an error in a voter registration drive sponsored on campus by the College Democrats and the League of Women Voters, however, some of these students almost lost their opportunity to vote.
