This was the case again when both teams faced Scranton University at home on Saturday.
The match against Scranton concluded the Rangers' regular season in the Landmark Conference.
The day of matches was a disappointment for the Drew women and capped a losing season.
Although a few of the matches were competitive, the squad was overmatched against Scranton, whose women's team placed second in the Landmark Conference.
Carly Mora ('11) won the only singles event of the day for the Rangers, dominating the match 6-0, 6-1.
The Drew women were also salvaged one of the three doubles matches.
Sarah Cronholm ('11) and Mora faced an early deficit, but managed to come back and win 9-7.
The women's tennis team had to say goodbye to one of their best.
Alex Holzman ('08) played her last match for the Rangers.
"It's been quite an experience on Drew tennis and I can't imagine not being part of it for these past four years," Holzman said. "There were some really tough matches but that only motivates me to continue playing." The men also finished their winning season.
Against their conference foes, Scranton, the Rangers took six of the nine matches.
The men concluded an undefeated inaugural season in the Landmark Conference. Early on, it appeared the Rangers' streak was in jeopardy.
Jon Pivor ('08) and Vik Rao ('08) lost the first singles match in the conference. The Rangers managed to split the singles matches 3-3.
The Rangers also swept the doubles tournament.
"I thought that the team played relatively well, especially in the bottom part of the singles lineup," Nick Imbo ('11) said. "Sweeping doubles was huge-it put us in a much better position going into singles."
The Rangers will go into the playoffs having won all of their conference matches.
A conference title this year would be Drew's eight in a row, made all the more important by the conference transition to Landmark.
Regardless of performance this year, with the commencement of the 2009 season there will be good reason for optimism.
Although both the men and women will lose seniors who contributed tremendously to the school's tennis reputation and performance, each team will be getting freshmen which should only improve with age and experience.
Tomorrow, the men's tennis team will battle Catholic University in one last showdown for the Landmark Conference Championship.
