Drew University's women's lacrosse team opened their Landmark Conference schedule last week, and as expected with a young squad, results were mixed. Combining a tough one-goal loss at Goucher College with a dominating 18-10 triumph at Moravian College, the young Rangers team is proving to have the firepower to compete with any squad the Landmark can put up against them.

Saturday's contest at Goucher saw the Rangers get off to a slower start then they've become accustomed to, as the Gophers sprang out to a 5-2 lead in the opening 10 minutes.

As has become their calling card of sorts, the Rangers quickly closed the gap to one at halftime with an explosive scoring burst, as midfielder Stacie Brown ('11) scored twice to lead Drew back to within 7-6 at the break. Unfortunately for the young Rangers, Goucher showed the same offensive capabilities that served them so well earlier in the game after intermission, jumping to an 11-7 margin with 15 minutes remaining. This lead ultimately proved too much for Drew to overcome.

The team scored three times late in the game, with Brown's third score bringing Drew to within 11-10 with three minutes remaining. A final flurry of shots was turned away by Goucher's netminder, and the Rangers were forced to swallow another tough loss. The loss dropped Drew down to .500 at 5-5, with a 0-1 mark in-conference.

Despite the setback, Wednesday brought another in-conference challenger to Drew's horizon, this time at the unfriendly confines of Moravian's Bethlehem, Pa. campus. The Greyhounds played tough lacrosse thus far, earning a 6-3 record entering the contest- they continued to play well at the outset against the Rangers leading 2-1 10 minutes in. It was then that Drew again showed the ability to unleash an offensive burst, ripping off six goals in the span of eight minutes, to lead 7-2. The Rangers were also able to counter four Moravian goals with four straight of their own, and swept into halftime with an 11-6 lead. Drew was never seriously threatened again, and won with a score of 18-10. In the end, the deciding factors in the Ranger triumph were twofold. Drew buried the Moravian keeper under a 51-shot barrage, including a devastating 29-8 edge in the second half.

The second factor that helped the Rangers pad their lead was continued sloppy Moravian play, as 24 Greyhound turnovers submarined any chance of a comeback. The game was especially rewarding for Coach Kim Christos' recruiting class of 2011, as 14 of Drew's 18 goals were scored by first-year players, led by four tallies each from midfielder Sloane Coles ('11) and attacker Cara Jeffries ('11).

The Rangers' record now stands at 6-5 overall, with an even 1-1 inside the Landmark. They face another in-conference rival Saturday, this time at home against the University of Scranton.
