The Drew University women's fencing team had an exceptional showing this weekend and both they and the men's squad are in great shape leading into this weekend's NCAA Regionals. Finishing 4th overall at the NIWFA Team Championships, the Drew women took a silver medal in the saber as well as a solid 6th in both epee and foil competitions, getting a great boost of confidence in the process. "We've been working really hard these past few weeks and we had a great showing," Naomi Bocarsly ('09) said. "Coach [Dayn DeRose] has been working a lot with us and it's paying off."
Carlin McNichol ('11) led the way for the Rangers' impressive showing with a career day, going 11-0 in pool play along with strong showings from Alicia Rapp ('10) with 8-3 on the day and captain Emma Nostrand ('08) ,7-4. All three finished in the top 15 overall.
Foil added another top-15 Ranger to the mix as Dina Attyeh ('11) had an excellent string of seven victories on the day. She was supported by quality showings from both Amy Lester ('08) and Virginia Cooper ('11), who took 4th in her pool with six wins.
The epee division featured the highest placing Ranger of the day as Heidi Einholz ('10) took 10th overall with a 9-3 mark. Along with Bocarsly finishing 11th in her pool and Allison Waters finishing 5th in hers, the squad's 6th-place finish gave the Rangers all the numbers they would need to clinch a solid 4th place.
This weekend's results could not come at a better time. Drew's fencing squads have been national competitors for years and this year is no exception.
Adding intrigue to the mix is the fact that the Rangers' road to the NCAA tournament goes right into The Forest. This Saturday, the NCAA regionals will be held at home, and the home squads will not be watching from the sidelines.
Thirteen Rangers have qualified to fence this Saturday for a chance to go to the national tournament, which will be held at Ohio State University on March 13.
