Professional South Indian dancer and Drew international student Sathya Stephen (T '11), who is a disciple of Guru Shrimati Nagapriya Kathikeyan, performed traditional dances on Monday in University Center room 107.
Stephen performed Bharathanatyam, which is considered the jewel of South Indian ancient Hindu dance, and dates back to 200 B.C.E.
I was surprised to see this story, at the first place.
With less knowledge on bharatam, i could say that Bharata- Natyam is the most eminent style in relation to the rules enunciated in the "Natya Shastra", which is a rhythmic combination of drama, dance and music written around 2000 years ago by the sage Bharata Muni(approx 200 bc). (Continued…)
