In The Space, Drew University's radio station WMNJ is celebrating its online debut with cheese puffs and live music. To help kick off the event, a few Drew bands were drawn in to make an appearance, and Matt Ognowski's ('10) Open Horizon bandmates have just arrived on campus.
Ognowski, Andre Aklian, from Clark, N.J. and Nick Golden, from Cranford, N.J., sat down with The Acorn in the slightly quieter UC lounge to discuss how God brought them together, the real story behind their name and why you should spend your Saturday night at TOE to hear their debut.
Acorn: You're from all over the place, so how did you guys meet?
A.A.: We went to church together and were in the music ministry, and I was in college bands before and was just looking to form a new group, and I realized 'Wait, I go to church with these guys.'
M.O.: We just started jamming, but not Jesus music.
N.G.: I've only been playing the bass since September. They taught me it, and I learned like 13 songs in a month.
Acorn: Tell me about the name. How did you come up with Open Horizons?
A.A.: I really just loved the name, it was my Myspace user name and one night before we were going to play my friends were like, "Should I just tell them they're going to see Open Horizons?"
M.O.: That's not how it happened. You mentioned it to me jokingly and I thought you were serious.
A.A.: This was before that. But really, it just represents a new beginning, this fresh mindset we all have.
M.O.: It's the beginning of something, kind of like, this is new for all of us, new group.
Acorn: Well, no band likes this question, but what's your sound? What can people expect to hear from you?
A.A.: Kind of like, a tonic band.
M.O.: Tonic band? What?
A.A.: Like you'll hear a little Dave Matthews Band, Incubus, some harder rock-it's a real spectrum of things, and some 90's alternative rock too.
