The Drew University men's and women's swim teams are rounding into fine form leading into the Landmark Conference championship meet next weekend.
The regular season for both squads came to an exciting close this Saturday, as the final meet for the team's five senior captains saw the men's team set numerous personal records in a close 131-103 loss to Mount St. Mary's College , while the women's team, soundly defeated the Blue Knights, 144-101.
The women's team enjoyed a banner afternoon on their senior meet afternoon as they outpaced Mount St. Mary's from the opening whistle. Two of their captains shone especially brightly on a day honoring their efforts over the past four years.
Kellie Joyce ('08) won three races individually, taking home firsts in the 100-and 200-meter backstroke in 1:11.25 and 2:27.92, respectively, as well as the 400 intermediate medley in an impressive 5:14.56. Beth Crockford-Peters ('08) won two races of her own, cruising to victory in both the 500 freestyle, in a time of 6:12.59, and the 1000 freestyle in 12:21.92. Each also partnered with younger teammates to win a relay race, in the process winning the lion's share of the Rangers' points on the day. Kati Eggert ('11) continued her terrific debut campaign as well, winning the 50 freestyle in 26.44, besting her time from last week, as well taking first in the 100 butterfly in 1:08.43.
The men's team had an exceptionally fine showing, as the trend of senior leaders giving nothing but their best carried over from the women's meet.
Captain Andrew Cronholm ('08) closed out an outstanding four years of conference play with wins in the 100 freestyle in 52.07 as well as the 200 freestyle in 1:57.19. Co-captain Ryosuke Kuroki ('08) won two races as well, taking first in the 200 breaststroke in 2:44.41 as well as the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.78.
This second event's victory was notable as Kuroki won despite losing his goggles mid-race, proving that even a twist of fate could not derail Ranger momentum.
John Feniello ('11) showed that the future of Drew swimming is well in hand, winning the 50-meter freestyle in 25.57 seconds, as well as taking a second in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:09.44.
The development of the younger swimmers on both squads has been a consistent theme throughout the season, and with five captains leaving via graduation in May, the leadership qualities shown by the next generation leaves the teams in good hands come next November.
The Rangers finish their 2007-08 campaign this coming Friday, when the Landmark Conference championships are held at the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. Both teams are looking to make an impact going into next season, and the five senior captains for the combined squads will be looking to make a final mark on their remarkable tenure at Drew.
