The good ole boys from Athens, Ga. have conjured up a sound of their own-blending elements of multiple sub-genres of music. "Brighter Than Creation's Dark" consists of 19 songs.
"Brighter Than Creation's Dark" contains many of the elements that made their previous album, "A Blessing and a Curse" such a success.
There is an incredible amount of musical versatility on their most recent release. There are country songs, there are rock songs, and there are songs that defy the boundaries of genres of music. You can expect to hear pedal steel, slide guitar and a lot of reverberation on the vocals. Their album, with the exception of a few songs, flows well. If you play blues guitar, you will love this album-Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood tear it up with riffs and licks that will cut you straight to your heart in songs such as "Three Dimes Down," "The Righteous Path" and "Goode's Field Road." If you sing, you will love this album. Although the vocals are well done on the entire album, vocalist Shonna Tucker steals the show. Tucker, a Neko Case sound-alike, sounds heavenly soulful on "The Purgatory Line" and "Home Field Advantage," If you're a fan of traditional country music, tracks like "Perfect Timing," "Bob," and "Daddy Needs a Drink" will soothe your soul with harmonies and reverberated pedal steel. The lyrics on the album are heavy, but you wouldn't realize it from the way the songs are played. The Drive-By Truckers make songs about death, destruction, drug addiction and domestic issues sound beautiful.
