The University of Pennsylvania's Hutchinson Gym rose a few degrees on Saturday as Drew University's men's and women's fencing teams arrived with the fire and intensity to win.
The men's team split the meet with a convincing 20-7 victory over Sacred Heart University and a hard-fought loss to the heavily favored host school.
The women's team fenced competitively, but dropped both matches.
The men's rout over Sacred Heart was due in large part to a pair of 7-2 wins in epee and sabre. Ryan DiPeri ('08) and Tim Howes ('08) led the epee squad by posting a combined 5-0 record.
A pair of veterans and a newcomer led the sabre squad.
Max Pike ('09) captured wins in both bouts, while Andrew Murray ('09) and Sam Varon ('11) each went 2-1.
Didrik Etholm ('11) anchored foil with an undefeated 3-0 record.
"We pretty much dominated Sacred Heart," Howes said. "Several of us went undefeated and our subs beat their subs very decisively."
With Drew winning by a lopsided margin, the team gave everyone a chance to compete.
"Once we reached 14 points, the amount needed to win the meet, we put in our subs so that everyone could maximize their fencing experience," Howes said.
Unfortunately for Drew, there was no excuse to use substitutes against Penn. The Quakers gave the Rangers a dose of their own medicine, defeating them by the same score of 20-7.
"Penn has a strong team," Murray said. "We continued to fence well, but it just wasn't enough to win."
Although the Quakers dealt the Rangers a fairly one-sided defeat, several Rangers displayed the ability to win on the Division I stage.
"Scott Bransdorfer ('10) and I each won a bout against their starting lineup," Howes said. "The other five bouts [that] we won were against subs, but that's not such a bad thing. It means that our subs have serious potential because even Penn's B-team fencers are strong."
The epee squad led the men's team again as Matt Josephs ('11), Mike Huemann ('09), Howes and DiPeri all collected victories in a narrow 5-4 defeat. Joren Madsen ('11) and Brandsdorfer each won bouts in foil, while Pike was the only sabre to win a bout.
