Last Sunday, Drew University's men's lacrosse team faced off against fellow Mid Atlantic Conference competitors Elizabethtown College.
Although the Rangers suffered a 12-8 loss, midfielder senior Gil Arbitsman delivered a standout performance, scoring four goals for the Rangers.
"I was really pumped to play E-town, because I wanted to avenge last year's loss," Arbitsman said. "I approach every conference game like it's a playoff game. The MAC is so competitive that any one loss can ruin your season."
Arbitsman, the Rangers' third leading scorer, has been a key player since arriving on the Ranger scene four years ago as a freshman.
"I started getting serious playing time right when I got to Drew and have been on the first midfield line ever since," Arbitsman said. However, a lot has changed for the squad since then.
"That year, our roster fluctuated from as many as 24 players to as few as 16 due to injuries."
"With our team nearing 40 players this season, we have been able to get a lot more out of practices due to increased competition and guys pushing each other to get better every day."
Last season, Arbitsman received numerous honors in recognition of his standout play, including being named to MAC's All-Academic team and being chosen as an ESPN Academic All-American.
This season, Arbitsman will have some high expectations to meet, but his first priority is his team.
"I'm proud to have been recognized for my hard work, but these individual honors don't matter nearly as much as our success as a team," Arbitsman said. "I would throw away every individual honor I've received in exchange for a conference championship, and that's what we're working towards this season."
It is this kind of attitude that has Coach Thomas Leanos very pleased.
"Gil is a pleasure to coach," Leanos said. "He's been a model citizen in the classroom, in the community and on the field since his freshman year. He is only the second sophomore that has been a part of the program that was elected captain by his teammates. So, he is now in his third year as a captain for us."
