Socks and sandals: A spring style guide for guys

Charlotte Hammond

Issue date: 3/30/07 Section: Opinion
Spring has sprung at Drew University, and you know what that means-'tis the season for flip-flops and finals.

In the first breaths of spring, everyone does the traditional "look, look, I'm bustin' out the summer wardrobe," and Drew goes from looking like a ski resort to the OC in one fell swoop.

Normally, it is the female crowd that gets chastised for poor taste in spring dressing-typical mistakes of too much "information," slip-ups in sunless tanner and, my personal pet peeve, rockin' the tank top with blatant bra straps.

But looking around the Commons on the unofficial spring commencement, I noticed an unsettling number of guys who really needed to make better clothing choices.

Summer style is a tricky animal, and it's really easy to mistake "easy, sleazy, unacceptable" for "easy, breezy, beautiful."

By no means do I expect boys to risk distorting their comfort with their sexual orientation by buying out the J. Crew spring line, but the following carnal sins should be acknowledged.

Just because you mow lawns for extra cash doesn't mean you have to look like it.

Muscle tees.

These are never really OK-the exclamation "wow" comes to mind, and by "wow" I mean Work Out World, as the gym is the only place where such shirts are understandable.

Same goes for tank tops.

You work out and have nice arms? That's hot. But it would be so much more subtle and attractive if your biceps were defined by a fitted t-shirt, or slightly visible through a close cut oxford, with the sleeves rolled up. Trust me.

No double standards gentlemen, girls are not turned on by underarm hair any more than you are.

Underarmor, on the outside.

What? Are you serious? Keep it in the gym.

Excessive hemp or shell jewelry.

We get it, you like jam bands. Your mom got creative one Christmas in middle school and bought you a shell necklace from PacSun.

And it would be cool to see how long it takes until that hemp anklet rots off your body-but this is not summer camp, and there are probably a surprising amount of germs clinging to that expression of your hippie credibility. Give them a rest.

THis article is offensive. It is perhaps the most judgemental article I have ever read in this paper. Who is the athour to judge what I or other wear fashion is freedom of expression. (Continued…)
