Bells of mourning are ringing for the tri-school competition planned to be held at Drew this month.
The Battle of the Bells was a competition in which Drew, Farleigh Dickinson University and The College of St. Elizabeth would participate.
The competition was to be held over the course of two days on all three college campuses.
The three schools negotiated at several meetings to plan for the event and all looked well for the event to come back to Drew. However, outside conditions threw the event off track.
"We were definitely on board," coordinator James Ramey said. "FDU had to cancel because no one was allowed on their campus after they had that virus outbreak on their campus," he said. FDU recently had a norovirus outbreak on their campus.
Norovirus is the official name for a group of viruses that cause the stomach flu or gastroenteritis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"It was the week of Battle of the Bell and the week after and they couldn't reschedule," Ramey said. FDU was a central part of the Battle of the Bells, and since no one was allowed onto their campus, it would have been impossible to hold the event.
"We couldn't have the event without the physical competition on their campus," Ramey said.
The event hasn't been officially cancelled, just postponed.
"Everyone, including students senior Allie Segal, senior Ellen Wagner and junior Yasin Abbak put a lot of hard work into this," Ramey said. "All is not lost though, because we have the foundation for the program all ready to go, and we plan on having it this fall."
"We had all the teams set here at Drew and people seemed pretty excited," he said.
Drew wasn't alone in that respect. St. Elizabeth sophomore Katrina Cleofe remarked on the feelings at the College of St. Elizabeth. "We're getting a positive response from the students and the faculty," she said.
"The momentum is pretty strong here at [St. Elizabeth] and from what I hear it's the same in the two other schools."
If all goes as planned, the Battle of the Bells will be back sometime in the upcoming fall semester.
