Drew University's equestrian team placed fourth in last Sunday's show at Briarwood Farms, falling from third place in the region.
Although there were several individual wins, some riders endured difficulties with horses' behavior which ultimately led to a tie with Pace University for fourth place.
"Everybody rode really well. A little bit of bad luck with some of the rides [resulted in the loss]," Coach Karen Sykes said.
Equestrian is the only sport at Drew offering an alumni division. Drew alumni can compete against one another after completing the college program. Assistant Coaches Sandra Sayre and Kristine Kennedy competed in the alumni division last Sunday. Sayre finished first in alumni flat and second in her fences class. Kennedy finished third in flat and fifth in her fences class.
Co-captain junior Paige Weller had a won first place in her intermediate fences course and third in her flat class.
"I was pleased with how [the show] went. It was my best show ever," Weller said. She drew her favorite horse, Luther. She had only ridden him once before.
Sophomore Laura Dziamba also placed first in her novice fences class.
The Cacchione Cup is a championship eligible for the open rider with the highest combined flat and jumping scores. Junior Jim Fairclough is currently in second place for the cup.
Sykes said the team remains in a good position to be in the top three in the region by Thanksgiving break. "I am very proud of the kids," Sykes said. "They are doing an awesome job."
