While many Drew students were tanning on the beach over spring break, a select few were concentrating on life after college. The Drew University Student Alumni/ae Association put together an initiative that allowed Drew students to shadow alumnae at their workplace for a day over spring break. According to Development Associate of Alumni/ae Relations Lisa Bevacqua, students were paired up with alumnae that volunteered their work space for the program before spring break.
The program was designed to familiarize students with work environments in a setting that was comfortable for them. According to freshman Christina Hinze, the program gave her an idea of what career she may want in her future. I think the program will be great for people to experience various jobs, if they do it several times, and perhaps find out which job they are made for and would love to pursue, Hinze said.
The program was the first of its kind at Drew, and students were extremely satisfied with what they learned. Hinze, who shadowed Jeff Noss (CLA 75), learned a great deal at the Bank of New York. Noss is the vice president of the Bank of New York and a Drew trustee. I got the chance to experience a real day at a real job, not just a job interview or tour of a company, which doesnt give you any real idea of what the job entails, Hinze said.
Bevacqua hopes that the program continues in the future. Although this was its first year, the programs real benefit will come to those who participate year after year, according to Hinze. The whole experience gave me a lot more insight into the world of finance and banking and I was surprised how much I was able and willing to learn in just one day, she said.
