Say farewell to the old dungeon that you know as the Space. Thanks to the donations of Drews seniors throughout the next five years, the Space we all once knew is getting a facelift.
According to senior Sigourney Giblin, the president of the Senior Gift Society, she and her committee of fellow seniors chose to renovate space that is used by everyone rather than creating a scholarship or doing other renovations.
One of the options that the committee looked into was renovating the Aztec stairs. However, this idea was seen as ordinary compared to improving the Space.
The money received this year has crushed the previous record of $24,166 in 1987. This years seniors raised $28,541. The reason were doing so well is because I think people are excited about what we are doing and they feel connected to it, which was our original intent, Giblin said.
This years senior class has a lot of school spirit and have recognized the difference the faculty has made in their lives, Development Associate Marie Cacace said.
Previous gifts have been a senior scholarship in 1983, the renovation of the Brothers College bell tower by the class of 1984, the benches in front of the library by the class of 1994, the addition of benches in front of Brothers College in 1998 and the illuminated clock located in front of the University Center by last years seniors.
From the feedback I received both from talking to the committee and a lot of seniors, most people wanted to put the money towards something that be used by everybody, Giblin said.
After the idea was finally decided, Cacace said she received great amounts of positive feedback from the phone-a-thon she also runs. Students told Cacace that they couldnt think of a better idea than to spend their money on something the students could use.
The actual renovations that are going to be made include a complete overhaul of the look of the Space. Giblin hopes to clean the floors, repaint the walls, redo some of the lighting and attempt to improve the sound system.
As far as redecorating we want to put up lots of Drew memorabilia to represent all of the different groups on campus.
Students should not worry about junior Victor Garcias new painting on the back wall of the Space. Giblin made sure that Garcias work would be incorporated into the new design of the Space.
We wanted it to kind of be a Drew pride source because there is no place on campus that is a focal point of school pride for Drew, Giblin said.
If and when a new University Center is built, the Senior Gift Society ensured that most of the new furniture and trophy displays that are being purchased will be portable.
