The mens basketball season came to an end Saturday afternoon in the Baldwin Gym as they lost to playoff-bound Wilkes University 70-55. The Rangers finished the season 9-16 overall with a record of 4-10 in the Freedom Conference. With their four wins, Drew finished 6th in the Freedom Conference, a huge improvement from last years dismal season when they finished in last place with no wins.
Leading the way for Drew against the Colonels was sophomore center Sam Taub with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Taub did a lot of hard work in the paint to help keep the the Rangers in the game. Also helping Drew was freshman Dennis Mayes who had the crowd on their feet all game long with his inspiring defense and leaping ability. Mayes finished with 6 points and 2 steals. Also providing a spark was sophomore guard Mike Amalfe who had 3 steals and 4 points off the bench.
For the season Drew was lead by sophomore guard Chris Lopez who received second-team all-conference honors. Lopez finished the season leading the team, scoring 12.4 points per game and pulling down 5.3 rebounds per game. Also helping the Rangers this season was junior guard Bob Carella who helped the squad with 9.4 points per game and 4.2 rebounds per game. Taub also led the Rangers frontcourt as he contributed 8.6 points per game while ripping down 4.9 rebounds per game. Those two usually provided Drew with a steady performance each night, but, the Rangers also received valuable contributions from sophomores Damon DiLorenzo, David Cramer, Amalfe, and David Pepperman. Also helping the Rangers in his freshman campaign was Gerard Mullin. He got valuable playing time starting in 17 of the teams 23 games, providing solid outside shooting and great defense. Mullin averaged 5.9 points per game.
Although Drew finished the season losing 5 out of their last 6, Drew was in nearly every game and that should provide Coach Townes with encouragement as he gets ready to start up again next October. The Rangers return everyone next season and will look to make a strong run at the conference playoffs.
We had a great run this year and although we came so close this season, we know its going to take even more work in the off season, junior Captain Kevin Codey said. Hopefully everyone commits themselves this spring and summer as we look to make a run next winter to reach our goal of making the conference playoffs.
