Riding on the success of the wildly popular "Songs about Jane," Maroon 5 delivers with their highly anticipated follow-up. "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" is a musical smorgasbord. This CD skillfully captures the tumultuous happenings of love relationships and sets them all to beats you can dance to. It is by turns charming, playful and racy.

True to the band's style, sensually charged lyrics provide the thrust to this album. This potentially controversial quality of Maroon 5's music is neutralized with infectious melodies. One song where this holds true is the first track, "If I Never See Your Face Again," which boasts a retro beat that's a throwback to the early '70s with contemporary twist loops throughout the song. It's disarmingly catchy quality will have you singing along in no time. But before you know it, you'll catch yourself saying, "If I never see your face again, I don't mind/ Cause we got much further than I thought we'd get tonight."

But not all the songs are so forward. There is a gentler side to the music as well. One song where this is apparent is in the last track, "Back At Your Door." Toned-down piano and string arrangements are woven into the music, giving it a softer quality. It's a great song to sway or slow dance to. The lyrics are just as pleasant, "If I took you for granted, I apologize for acting tough/ You're my reason for living and there's no way I'm giving up/ Don't need to cry about it/ I cannot live without it/ Every time I wind up back at your door."

The heaviest song on the album is "Kiwi." While it has the pop quality along with the rest of the songs on the album, it ends with a riveting guitar solo. "Kiwi" is the only song reminiscent of the rock vibe present in the band's first single, "Harder to Breathe." It was impressive to see this pop band get back to the sound that first introduced them to the world.

All too often, bands deliver with a debut album but it's all down hill from there. Not so for this California quintet. "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" showcases the band's versatility as well as their ability to stay true to their musical identity. This album has something for a variety of tastes. Whether you're into music with a catchy hook, a hard edge or a Tony Bennett big-band vibe, this album won't disappoint.
