Student apathy toward on-campus events and programming has become a much-discussed topic at universities nationwide. Drew University is no different.
A Feb. 20, 2008 article posted on the National Association of Statistics website, www.nas.org, that discussed the decline in student and faculty involvment on campuses nationwide said, “Carnegie found widespread disappointment and concern among faculty, students and college presidents about the state of ‘community’ on their campuses. It found that institutions scored poorly on the level of interaction among faculty and students and that the majority of students had become ‘less engaged in all aspects of academic and nonacademic campus life.”
Last fall, I urged my fellow New Jersey Drewids, together with their parents, to support Democrat Jon Corzine for re-election as Governor of New Jersey. At the time, I warned that should Republican Chris Christie be elected, he would attempt to severely reduce, if not eliminate, the programs and policies that have helped thousands of New Jersey residents in times of need and distress.
The devastating earthquake in Haiti on Jan. 12 resulted in many local and national disaster relief efforts. Here on campus, the motto for the Haiti Relief Fund is, “Building bridges from The Forest to the island.” So far, the fund has successfully overcome this feat.
It was a phenomenal weekend for the Drew University Women’s Basketball team. They beat Catholic University by three points on Friday and crushed Goucher College 57-39 on Saturday. Unfortunately, the Drew University Men’s Basketball team did not fare as well. On Friday, they had a devastating 46-70 loss to Catholic and lost 49-55 to Goucher on Saturday.
